WoW Forever Character Names & Surnames

How Forever’s two-part names work in a realmless world, what the September 17 Q&A clarified, and when early name reservation begins.

Mixed evidence, labeled by source. This page combines Blizzard-confirmed information with gameplay captures, media reporting, and community research. Verification badges show the evidence level for individual entries; official confirmation takes precedence where sources differ.

Surname is required

The Q&A clarified that the surname field cannot be left empty.

Names are region-wide

Naming is not isolated to a traditional realm. The team said a name used on one ruleset is unavailable on another within the region.

Realmless identity

Two-part names are part of Blizzard’s solution for recognizable character identity in the new ruleset-based world structure.

Early reservation: Oct 27–Nov 3

Any Forever upgrade purchase includes Early Name Reservation, allowing up to three characters to be created and customized.

Why surnames exist in Forever

Traditional WoW ties name uniqueness to a realm. Forever removes the normal realm-selection model, so Blizzard is using two-part character names and region-wide naming to preserve recognizable identities at much larger population scale.

The Q&A framed surnames as intentionally roleplay-forward rather than merely a technical database workaround.

Early Name Reservation

  • Included with any WoW Forever upgrade purchase.
  • Create and customize up to three characters during the reservation period.
