Classic diff
WoW Forever vs Classic
Blizzard-confirmed system changes are shown separately from the research-derived talent diff, where community-transcribed and estimated tooltip details still require Beta validation.
Blizzard confirmed · Deep Dive + Sep 17 Q&A
Official system differences
These comparisons combine Blizzard's Forever Deep Dive with the September 17 official developer Q&A; research-derived talent data remains separated below.
| Area | Classic | Forever |
|---|---|---|
| Realmless structure | Choose a named realm first. | Choose a ruleset instead of a traditional realm. Normal, PvP, and Roleplaying are part of the launch structure; Hardcore is planned for later. Realmless does not mean regionless, so geographic regions and data centers still matter. |
| Classic / Enhanced presentation | Classic Era uses the original presentation and does not offer a modern-style mode toggle. | Choose Classic or Enhanced when you first log in. Classic Mode automatically disables quest tracking and transmog; SD/HD character models can also be toggled later in graphics settings. |
| Character names | Single character name scoped by realm. | Two-part character names unique per region; the surname field is mandatory. |
| Talent milestones | Familiar 11/21/31-point milestones. | Keeps 11/21/31 and adds a new 16-point milestone. |
| Class buffs | Some signature group buffs consume talent points. | Divine Spirit, Blessing of Kings, and Improved Mark of the Wild move to baseline class abilities. |
| Hit and Crit stats | Separate spell, melee, and ranged variants. | Spell, melee, and ranged Hit are combined; Crit is combined in the same way. |
| Healing gear | Healing and damage bonuses are more sharply separated. | Bonus Healing also grants one-third of that amount as Bonus Damage. |
| Transmog | No modern collection-based transmog system. | Transmog is supported but can be disabled entirely; Classic Mode starts with it disabled. |
| Dungeon loot | Original Classic-era itemization and appearance acquisition. | Dungeon drops are being reviewed broadly, with hundreds of new drops and shared eligible-looter appearance unlocks for Uncommon/Rare BoP items. |
| Addon API | Classic-era combat addons can access a broader set of combat information. | Uses the modern API direction with tighter combat restrictions, while UI customization remains supported. |
| Raid-size model | Endgame progression is centered on fixed raid sizes, including major 40-player raids. | Every raid tier is intended to include both a 10-player and a 20-player raid; Onyxia remains 40-player at launch. |
| GDKP | Policy has varied across Classic versions and seasons. | GDKP is explicitly not allowed; Blizzard cites guild structure, newcomer barriers, and illicit-gold laundering concerns. |

What the talent comparison means
New means the research archive has a Forever talent without a matching Classic talent in that position/name set.
Changed includes effect, rank, placement, or naming differences detected by the research pipeline.
Removed rows come from the Classic-side comparison archive and should be rechecked when Beta data is complete.
